Irrigation Installation

Installation and Design Services

The design and installation of an irrigation system is a science most people are not familiar with. Many of our customers have never had an irrigation system before and therefore do not what to look for as they search for value in an irrigation system. This page is provided to help you see the differences between the methods of installation, design practices and products that are being used in the industry.

Design

We take the design of our lawn sprinkler systems very seriously. Our irrigation systems are designed in-house by a Certified Irrigation Designer. We don’t rely on our suppliers to do this. Our designers know that a good irrigation design starts with the customer's needs, factors in site conditions such as plant species, sun exposure, slopes, soil type, water supply, and drainage situations.

Rainy Days' irrigation systems achieve water efficiency by designing the system with these methods:
  • Balanced precipitation
  • Proper head spacing
  • Managing pressure losses
  • Zoning system based on needs of microclimates
  • Using check valves in heads
  • Using drip irrigation when applicable for planting beds and trees
  • Using a rain sensor that will shut the system off in the event of rain

Installation

We do it right!  A quality installation is just as important as a good design. Rainy Days goes above and beyond to make sure your lawn sprinkler system is installed right. There are no short cuts at Rainy Days.

  • We call the utility companies (gas, water, phone, power and cable) to have these underground items located for protection.
  • Our in-house licensed plumber pulls the permits required to make sure the water supply is connected properly. By using an in-house licensed plumber we have more control on where the backflow preventer is located.
  • Our staff of Certified Irrigation Contractors take the responsibility of mentoring new employees that you'll have knowledgeable people installing your system.
  • This ensures all sprinkler heads and valves are installed flush with grade so that they're out of your way when you mow.
  • Piping is installed at least 12” deep into a clean trench (no plowing)
  • Single strand wire is used for all direct bury applications
  • Heads are set away from walkways or drives so edger operators are able to stay clear
  • Exposed wire at controller is installed in an electrical conduit for protection
  • UL approved 3M wire splices are used at any in ground splice locations (always in a valve box)
  • Proper glueing technics are used that include the use of pipe cleaner
  • Reducing water pressure delivered to the irrigation system in the event that the pressure exceeds what is needed to operate the system effectively
  • Each site is left clean at the end of each day and especially at the end of the job
  • All required inspections are completed

User orientation

The job is not complete until the owner receives a complete orientation to their new system. Our staff goes the extra mile by providing additional materials.

  • A record drawing is created for each system, given to the owner and a copy is kept in our office
  • An owner’s manual for the controller plus an owners manual created by Rainy Days is given to the owner
  • A system review is conducted for the owner
  • A watering schedule is created based on historical water needs information
  • The controller is labeled with zone location information and other information that a user may need when programming.

Trenched Pipe Installation vs. Plowing

We believe trenching ensures that each pipe is put into place without undo stress being applied during or after the installation or that there are not any rocks that can damage the pipe over time or that the pipe depth is consistent. The most common service call is for a broken pipe or a loose fitting.

Another misconception about plowing is that the lawn is not damaged during the installation. The reality is that plowing lifts the soil about 4” creating a “slow bump” in your yard. This mound must be compacted down and during the compaction process the roots of the grass are damaged. The damage does not show up right away but as soon as the temperature rises the plant suffers.
